So I guess Spa ownership will never be a mainstream business because of the stigma attached to it.

I own a spa. My name is on the licence. I own 2 other mainstream business. My name is on the ownership papers. I signed all the lease agreements. I am the person who goes to City Hall to get the licence for the Spa. I am one of the largest supplier of Massage comsumables to the wholesalers who sells to these Asian Spas.

My name is out there if anyone does a search of the business. But is it that much of a Public exposure? Only interested parties will do a search. 99% of Joe public do not know or even care..

Like I said one cannot have it both ways. Is it a legal business or an underground (unlicenced) business. One has to make a decision.

I don't decide whether there is a stigma or not, society does.

You might feel differently about the risk of exposure if you were a female keeping this from their family.

It is a legal business, as long as the rules are followed. You should know that's not always the case.

Most of the times the cases were dismissed because the cops never show up for minor cases like these.

The girls who don't want a license that cost almost exactly $1 per day to make the income they currently are earning because of potential stigma will move on, and I would guess earn a significantly smaller yearly take. I would think you would be more likely to bump into an acquaintance in the spa or be seen going in or out the door than someone finding your name related to the license anywhere in person or online. For the spa's the cost is again, similar to utilities and if your business can't afford $500 increase in expense per month then your business probably isn't doing so great regardless.

Smart ladies who have already decided to do this sort of work because of the inordinate earning power compared to any other options they might have will bite the bullet. If a lot of girls leave, the ones who stay will be cashing in. This industry generates too much money to be shut down for such a pittance as the fees @krayjee has provided us here. Smart owners who stay the course will see their incomes increase, and those who bail will be unlikely to find as lucrative a business opportunity in any other field.

One thing is certain, demand for the services provided by the spa industry isn't going to go away. Smart owners will do well, and ladies looking to get into ownership may have a golden opportunity here. People, Potter isn't selling, he's BUYING! I would guess that the ladies who balk at first may end up making the same decision about this sort of work that initially led them to spa world, the money is good, and better by a not insignificant factor compared to what they will earn elsewhere.

The downside is if the crackdown is relentless and Body Rub and other licences are hard to get it will only drive this business underground.

Like free lancers etc doing service at condos and what have you. Hopefully this does not happen.

It really depends on the zone the spa is in. Some zones are very restrictive. I suspect Reflexology would fall under Personal Services which is not allowed in many zones.

RMTs are allowed pretty much everywhere but Bylaw will be more stringent checking them in the future. I was told being certified in Acupuncture is also permitted at most locations.

Many MPAs don’t want the body rub license on their record. Some are or plan to do RMT so they don’t want to be associated with body rub at all. Others are worried (justified or not) that people can search and find their names on the internet.

Gotcha - in that case yes fully agreed. Any girl getting licensed and staying would reap the benefits. I just don't see this being too common from all the above comments others have mentioned i.e. whore license, not wanting their names public etc.

Fair point about risk aversion. It's always been the case that some bylaw officer can make a visit, but just seems like right now there's too much attention in the EBC area.
