I can speak only from what I have seen, conversation I have had and women I known.
1) many have husbands ones they met in spa and have children. Some are happy others or not (men and the women) many sleep in separate bedrooms,. Others the husband's are too old to perform now and some the are comparable in age and live life. Some men are Asian others aren't
2) all people need some kind of social/emotional connection. An experienced MPA told me once they get married or serious boyfriend they are more calm emotionally and enjoy life more. Before that miserable and irritable. Go figure.

If you don't wanna get in that stay the hell out. If you get in know UPFRONT you're in for a hard long climb especially if you are culturally ignorant (read non Asian). That part alone make it difficult even with civilians. I was at an MPA home once, just to visit her son (my friend) seeing her boyfriend navigate the food (no chopsticks for him) she made and hearing us speak in Chinese (of course accommodating him by switching into English from time to time). And they've known each other for 10years. She's in her 50's and he's easily mid to late 60's.
