There was a link from CBC online where they interviewed the authorities from other countries who have legalized prostitution and, for eg, New Zealand expected a sudden increase in brothels and after a year, they didn't notice any change at all.

In holland, they found that illegal trafficing slowed at first but is now back to the levels it was before. Sweden (or was it switzerland?) expected a sudden increase in criminal activities but that never materialized either.

I think the main thing is that criminals only make big money on things that are illegal. If it's legal, and you can get it freely and openly, there's no money in it for them.

As for the human trafficing, as long as there are countries so poor that women will want to get out at any cost, there's going to be a problem.

I'm still a strong supporter of red light districts. Easy to patrol, monitor, and manage if its all in one or two places. I for one wouldn't want a brothel next door in or my building. I can totally understand how homeowners would be concerned.

I do not believe there will be a simple unencumbered legalization; I think there will be some level of regulation.


Today other industries where there are public safety concerns (for the workers and/or the public at large) are regulated. Think of taxis, bars, pharmacists, tattoo artists, real estate agents, etc. In some cases it is the establishment/workplace that is regulated, in some cases the worker, in some cases both. Some of the sex industry is already regulated in the same fashion in some places in Canada: as examples; strip clubs, exotic dancers, massage parlours, massage attendants, and even escorts.


One advantage of this approach is that it provides a clear delineation between those working legally and those not. Those working legally would fall under some regulatory agency freeing up LE to focus on those not working legally. Presumably those who couldn’t meet the regulatory requirements would be the underage, human traffickers, and those coerced into the industry; those that are the focus of the anti legalization groups.


Of course another reason sex workers might not want to register is the social stigma associated with the industry.



I just don’t see that it is likely that fully legalized prostitution would be unregulated.

Oh it would definitely be regulated. I could see the following:

For independants:
1) a schedule set up for health tests
2) Licencing
3) Locations in public where they can ply their trade. Say along Jarvis and I think it would be better for them because they wouldn't have to duck and run whenever they see a police car. Hopefully they would feel easier about approaching a cop if they were in trouble.

For establishments:
1) minimu standards for the location ie: cleanliness, availability of protection, body guards/doormen,
2) liquor licencing,
3) Establishment licence
4) all the other accroutrements that go along with having employees.
5) I could also see regulations put into effect limiting businesses from operating in residential neighbourhoods. For eg: no incalls in condos or sub-divisions. Again, I fully support a "red light district". Say Queen west with all the bars and nightclubs be approved for the installation of a brothel.

I could (or would like to) see places set up like strip joints where you can go, have a drink or two, watch the show(s) then if a lady catches your eye, you take her up stairs.

I really don't think it would be that much of a stretch. They already have rules and regs for exotic dancers etc. so it would be a sort of add on duty to the existing inspectors.

I could see if an indie wanted to set up an incall at her home. There would have to be regs put in place as to times when she can operate, how late at night, how many per day etc. Most indies don't see that many clients a day (or so they tell us) so I wouldn't have a problem with an indie working next door or down the hall.

I remember way back when I went to an incall on bay st. I could tell which door it was because the dark oak finish was worn off around the middle of the door by all the guys knocking. It was a pretty posh condo building too and was quite obvious.

Hopefully now that it is legal, any SP who had a bad date or was assaulted in some way now would feel easier about reporting it.

I think maybe the social stigma would reduce over time. I mean heck, look at all the porn stars and nude models who are totally open to their family about it? It's not as bad as it once was, at least IMO.

It will take a while, but hopefully the ruling stands and Canada moves in the right direction....

If what you suggest happens then clients can expect almost all the clean, normal girls to give up the trade. Our anonymity is as important to us as the clients is to them and registering will not be worth the stigma.

As a fully-functioning, well-adjusted adult I value my health, my life, my safety & my freedom. I do not need to be treated like a child and told when to go to the doctor or reminded to pay my taxes. I do these things for the reasons I just listed. I would however be in favour of paying say a $5 fee to obtain a copy of my medical check with my real name replaced by a number or something, to show any client who asks for it, or to display it in my location - similar to how restaurants must display their health department inspection certificate. Additional taxes, like the other sin taxes, will not work in this business. If you think clean, normal girls are going to go high-volume to satisfy additional taxes, you're wrong. Either the prices will go up in line with the taxes, or we'll just quit. When something isn't fun anymore it's time to leave.

Ultimately, the girls you will be left with will not be the ones you would hope.

The best resolution to this is the New Zealand model - de-criminalization, not legalization. Focus needs to be put on the trafficking issues - not adult men & women who make informed choices for themselves.

I saw the tail end of a CBC program by Wendy Mesley a night or two ago. What I didn't like was how they attributed human trafficking with the industry at large, even blaming CL or Now mag for that. A Cdn legal professor spoke of suing CL. While exploitation of minors and adult women exists, I didn't think it was fair to paint the entire industry with the same brush.
