Not trying to bring down the mood, but I think seeing the relationship as mostly businessperson and customer relationship explains a lot.
For the question asked in the title, like, can you really trust your real estate agent at all? How much can you trust your contact at car dealership? How much can you trust your mechanic? None of these people need to be "evil", they don't need to be "dishonest". But it's just reality that businessperson/customer relationship is just how it is.
However it really doesn't contradict with doing fun activities mentioned in this thread. Like you have to pay to play billards, not that far fetched to pay for other activities involving stick and holes.
