Jews have been accused of many things but one accusation that we're never accused of is being stupid. One indication of intelligence is measured by IQ, which Jews are consistantly at the top of (even above East Asians). The man whose very name is a shorthand for genius was an Ashkenazi Jew named Einstein.

So the question I wonder is, "why are Jews so smart?"

The theories, I think, can be divided into 4;

1. Levantine people like Lebanese are also good merchants and smart business-minded people so it's really just a good mixture of Armanoid, Semitic and Indo-Euro DNA leading to a talented people. This explains why Sephardi people were so successful too.

2. Culture; Jewish culture puts a heavy emphasis on study as well as debate, not just rote learning like a lot of religions. Jews, as "people of the book," are almost all highly literate and have been, unlike many other peoples, for thousands of years. "Jewish mothers" stereotypically want their children to be doctors and lawyers and there's a lot of pressure to succeed and Jewish tribalism with a ready-made network helped Jews succeed finacially and culturally. This theory doesn't explain how Jews came to dominate the careers once excluded to them by law or quota systems.

3. One recent theory is that Ashkenazi interbreeding (eg starting from a relatively small original population of about 15,000) which has lead to inherited deseases has also lead to brain mutation leading to increased intelligence. "The argument of Cochran and Harpending depends on Ashkenazi uniqueness. Their major contribution is to elaborate evidence that Ashkenazi intelligence is linked to mutations associated with brain metabolism and to certain Jewish genetic diseases (e.g., Tay-Sachs disease)." This theory doesn't explain why other Jewish groups eg Iraqi, Sephardi etc have also done so well within their own cultures historically.

4. The smartest people in pre-modern societies became religious leaders but Rabbis, unlike Catholic Priests, had children and passed on their genes whereas Priests were celebate so didn't pass on their genes to future generations. In fact Rabbis tended to have MORE children than the average Jew so gradually Jews got smarter whereas gentile Western Europeans didn't, or even regressed over the course of 1000 years, as it tended to be the poorer and less intelligent people who had more children in gentile societies with the (presumably) more intelligent (at least better educated) upper classes having less children.

My own view is Jewish genius is a mixture of all 4 of these reasons. What do people think?

It also helps they are united as a people. They do not have petty wars against each other (eg. Sunnis vs Shiites). Look at what the Germans and Japanese have been able to achieve, by being united.

Jews are not a race, merely devotees of a religion. As you mentioned, the majority share DNA with people from all over Europe and east of the Caspian, from whence the Ashkiazi originated. That flies in the face of the thinking that the people of Israel are descendants of the original tribes. A study a while ago to look at genetic makeup and origins of the modern day Israelis came back “inconclusive” because the Ashkenazi origins of most of the current Jewish adherents and Israeli residents is a bit of a sore point in Israel. They like to think of themselves as descendants of the original tribes. Not hating on them.
