Well, I'm in CR on business. Sort of a last minute thing. I'm at the Doubletree Cariari which is apparently a ways from any action.

Thinking myself semi-prepared, I hoped in a taxi and asked to go to the Del Rey (thinking it was big enough everyone must know it.) That promptly started a conversation about it's not safe, blah blah blah. Anyway, against my better judgement, I wound up at Tango India because it was "so close" (turns out it was $20 USD close, not $5 USD close). Nice club, nice people, some very nice girls (and some not so nice). The bill though made me think that the US clubs are a bargain. $25 for a lady drink, $25 cover (includes 3 beers so not terrible I guess). I got out pretty fast once I realized the prices. I only wound up with the lady drink because I thought it was covered under my cover (rookie mistake). The deal with anything more effective was money - $400 for a private room plus the girls fee. I can have multiple very nice girls almost anywhere in the world for less than that.

Anyway, thought I'd share the exact price structure since I didn't see it in the search.

Anyone know how much to get to the Del Rey or similar from here? I've considered just having room service but haven't been able to find anything that makes me think it's as advertised.

Apparently I'll be here every month or so on business so I'm trying to get my feet, so to speak, wet. I have to stay at the company approved hotel so moving closer isn't an option apparently.

You got burned your first time, who hasn't, welcome. You will be fine, you are not as far from the epi-center as you think. I presume you have a laptop so do a google and get your bearings. You are a ways off the beaten path to get to disneyland cheap, but if you're going to be here often monthly, as you know, you need to start figuring out how to get to and from the gulch the cheapest.

My hunch is cabbies are going to be too expensive in the long run unless you can justify them, so search the board for "dependable drivers", hook up with a bunch of them, you are going to need them. But my choice from where you are: rent cars are really cheap if you book on-line and mark the box you are in the states, to me that would make a lot of sense, driving in SJ is a pain in the ass but so is paying cabbies $$ if you want to go back and forth. After the first trip you will have it down. You are on the main dag coming in. Just need to go slow, let the jerks cut in front of you, look each way 5x more then you would at home.My guess is a car is going to be cheaper and more convenient unless $$ is not an issue, then cab it.

Also, I don't know about the chica policy at your hotel, others will chime in. That means you may need to find an alternative for that activity. So, maybe have a play room downtown since your base hotel is free, option #1, not nearly as expensive as where you will be stationed.

There's many other plans of attack, need to know more of your situation. Keep investigating, keep posting, other guys will chime in with good tips once they figure out your desired scenario/situation, you will get good advice here from alot of super experienced campers and in a few visits you'll have a routine set up. You don't need any more advice from tico cabbies.

If you do a search for 'clip joint' Tango India will be the first match. The cab driver gets a kickback for taking you there, and you probably pay higher prices to help pay for that kickback. Even an honest metered cab will be expensive from your hotel, and I can't imagine what one of the cabs parked in front of the Del Rey will try to charge. A rental car would be the way to go, especially if your company will pay. Part of CRT VIP membership includes a map that has all the massage parlors, strip clubs, and Del Rey type bars in the downtown area (as well as discounts that would probably cover cost of membership).

To get your bearings the first time it might be worth it to meet up with someone willing to show you around, you could try the roll call section. There is one member (sorry forget his name but a search should find him) that has been offering free rides from the airport who might be able to help you. Another option would be to hire a guide. Last I heard Pops is out of the country. You could try to private message Bilko and see if he is still doing a guide service (he's a great guy). Puravidatransport is another member, and CRT sponsor, that would be a good trustworthy driver to show you around.

TI is the #1 clip joint in San Jose. It caters to the wealthy tico and to foreign businessmen who don't know where to go. The irony is many TI dancers working there have also worked at HDR, Scarlett's, D'Pelufos, etc.

Consider this - even if you rent a car, you'll have to park it somewhere once you get to the HDR. There's parking across the street at KL but it'll cost you (sorry, I don't know how much).

Once you get there, now you'll have to find a chica you like willing to go all the way back with you to Cariari at a reasonable rate.

Once you're done with her, unless you negotiate up front she's going to ask you for taxi money from Cariari back home (or more likely, back to HDR).

And all this assumes your hotel is chica friendly, which it may not be.

Search for love motels or short term motels for posts on short term rentals close to the action. Also consider getting a play room right at HDR, Sportsmens' Lodge, Morazan, Amistad, Castillo, Dunn Inn or Hotel Little Havana.

One more option - if strips clubs are your thing, check out D'Pelufos in Alajuela, right across the street from the airport. It's somewhat closer to Cariari, and the action is much less expensive than Tango India. Don't try to barfine any chica cause they'll ask for a ridiculous amount of money; just go to a room on premises or, if you spot someone you like get her digits and make a 'date' for the next day. Be forewarned you can also end up spending lots of cash here if you're not careful, but at least the cover charge includes your first two drinks, the "lady drinks" aren't $25 and the chicas won't pressure you for dances or drinks.

Thanks for the replies. I think I've actually read the Newbie thread 10-20x already but I'm not as comfortable here as in SE Asia. Different enough I made a left even though I figured it was a scam. I guess the good news is I had an experience and am ready for another one tonight.

I'm sure the company will pay for a rental. Whether or not I want one is a different question I suspect. I'm not really sure I consider this country to have "drivers". I'm assuming the best policy is to buy the rental company insurance?

I think I'll try the trusted driver route for the rest of the trip (only 2 more days). The short term room is probably the best option for me since I need to keep my professional life separated.

I'll hit Roll Calls and see if someone's about. Really appreciate the advice!

aside from the pricing....what was the set-up like in terms of bars, poles and of course the airplane?

Setup was nice, clean and modern. Oddly, not all the chairs face the stage. The shows are basically a lingerie show in the first set and a nude in the second set. Each girl goes up individually, didn't see any groups. Not heavy use of the pole from what I saw. Was there about an hour or so. There are two poles on the stage that the girls kind of prance back and forth between.

Place was very clean on the inside. The girls don't bother you but will let the waiter ask if you want to buy them a drink. Not much discussion on pricing unless you push a bit. I only went into one room as a preview. They all have a view of the stage with a rail. Presumably so you can enjoy view and girl together if desired. The one I saw had a hot tub in it and was really nice.

Didn't really care of the lights. Seemed a bit strobe-like but maybe that's just me. There's a clear elevator that the girls can use as well. Lasers kind of do a random dance.
