Proposed Ontario human trafficking law will be ‘extremely harmful’ to sex workers, advocates say.

Advocates are calling on Ontario to drop Bill 251, saying a proposed bill has the potential to harm sex workers and could lead to discrimination and racial profiling.

The proposed law would give investigators the ability to inspect any place for compliance with the law and question any person on any matter that may be relevant to the inspection, with failure to comply leading to possible heavy fines.

"This is really, extremely harmful," Elene Lam of @ButterflyCSW says.

Police and inspectors would also have the power to ask for hotels to produce their guest registers, without court order, if they have reasonable grounds to suspect human trafficking.

“We know that police are not a source of safety for Black women even when they need support,” Robyn Maynard says.

The government says the bill will protect exploited children by providing law enforcement with more tools to locate and charge traffickers.

Hotels off the highway, with sliding door back entrances and black 'boyfriends' dropping off their white 'girlfriends'.
The hotels are owned by Indians, aka south Asians.

I used to see it often in the Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo area.
Now I see it in the London area.

There is much hypocrisy from the government that continues to attempt to regulate the sex trade which their law makers have deemed as criminal . The government continues to attempt to suck and blow at the same time which is impossible.
Prostitution is in effect legal in Canada because unless underaged sex workers are involved, LE is not concerned.
Actually the government is scared shitless about what would be their ultimate responsibility associated with the legalization of prostitution with all of the negatives associated with the trade such as working conditions, substance abuse problems, lobby groups like the religious right and some feminist organizations and racial discrimination. Legalization would very likely open up a can of worms that the government could not handle and would make for much political polarization.
With the generous social safety net in Canada prostitutes ply their trade by choice not out of necessity. The term human trafficking is very ambiguous in Canada when applied to adult sex workers in most instances.
