How much tip do you leave at dinning, beauty service, massage, etc?

I am talking about when the service is good. I have no problem not leaving tips when it's not good. As a matter of fact, I gave the tips ($10) to a hostess since I didn't feel I got a good service from my waitress.

How do people think and handle tips?

For example, if a bill is over $500 at dinner, do you still do 20%?

PS- last time we were at a restuarant, the waiter was very good and the bill was about $450, and my husband left $90 as the tip so I was just wonder if it is too much when the bill is high and we still do a %. Thanks all!!
Okay, I think that I needed to provide some clarification about the bill since some people think it is rather unreal. The bill above was for a party of 6 adults (no wine since none of us drink) and it was at Chesters in Wichita, KS. Also, I can give another example. Go to Blue Ocean in Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ, you will see $300+ for one appetizer (but it is so good ïÂ￾Å ). I understand tipping is a personal preference. I am asking the questions out of my curiosity. I truly appreciated the insights given by people who work in service industry. We as outsiders have no idea that our servers have to share their tips!

Dining is the only of those I ever do.

Between 15% - 20%, depending on the quality of service; less only if the service was REALLY bad, and their fault (as opposed to when they're vocering for others who didn't show, for instance).

BTW, not leaving a tip at all says to the person "I'm cheap, and avoid paying for anything whenever I can avoid paying. Basically, I am a thief."

To say "The servcie you provided was so poor, it shouldn't be compensated at all" one leaves a penny.

LOL! $500 for dinner?!?!?! I can't IMAGINE that. If you can afford to eat what I can only imagine is solid gold, you can afford to compensate people properly.

In industries where tipping is the norm, the employees are grossly underpaid, on the grounds that customers will compensate them.

YOU are only one of the reasons I wish all tipping would be abolished. I'm much rather see a menu that reflects the total cost; pay the bill, and not have to pay wages. But, until we implement that reasonable system, it's theft to not tip.

I have never paid $500 for a dinner. Oh My Goddess! 20% is my tip even if the service was a bit lacking. I sometimes pay more for really exceptional service but they always get at least 20% from me. These people work incredibly hard and put up with a lot of crap from inconsiderate people.

I'm only gonna answer the dinner question because thats the only one I have experience with. Yes you still and always leave 20% if you had good service. You may think its alot to tip a waiter $100 on $500, but if the bill was that high they probably worked really hard for it. Plus they still have to tip out to the bussers/hosts and bartenders for your party. So AT LEAST $15 is going to them, most places make you tip out 3% maybe more based on your sales NOT your tips, so if some one leaves no tip the server is actually PAYING out of pocket to wait on them. Also servers and bartenders most places only make $2.13 an hour, a third of minimum wage and live off tips, so when you tip your paying their bills, thats why servers SHOULD provide excellent service because they NEED your money too survive.

IMO services where they make at least minimum wage, i.e. hair dresser etc. a tip of 20% is not required, though some tip should be given for good service.

I would never tip $100 for a $500 meal. You have got to be crazy! On a $20 meal in a restaurant I'll tip $3 usually. If it's $15 I'll do $2. If they are good on a meal of $15 to $20 I'll pay $4

Yes when i went to a Portugese restaurant our waitress didn't do ANYTHING so we gave it to another waitor who kept helping us and then the girl flipped out and said we have to give it to her and we said no and left.

I personally don;'t feel beauticians should get tips because it is their JOB to serve you (just like waitors), especially if they OWN the salon, but I tip 10% at those services.

People are not OBLIGATED to get a tip. Especially if you are rude. they need to stop being ungrateful and be happy that people actually find it in their hearts to givve them EXTRA money when they already payed for their meal. If they don't like the amoutnt of tips they need to take it up with THEIR EMPLOYER who is paying thmem like $3.25 an hour
