According to a report by the Times of India, the illegal trade was predominantly run by individuals like Sikkandar Basha, who was recently arrested for orchestrating a widespread sex racket. Basha, alongside his accomplices, managed several spas across Coimbatore, allegedly generating monthly revenues of around INR 50 lakh. Investigations revealed that he had international connections, reportedly trafficking women from countries such as Russia for the purpose of exploitation. As per the report, the illegal sex trade in Coimbatore primarily operated under the guise of spas and massage centres, many of which were strategically located in bustling areas such as Gandhipuram, Peelamedu, and Hope College. These establishments offered services that included nude body massages with “happy endings,” drawing in clients through enticing advertisements on various online platforms. Once customers made contact, they were provided with photos of women available for selection, facilitating the illicit transactions. Charges for these services typically ranged from INR 2,000 to INR 3,000 per hour, with pricing varying based on the specific services chosen by customers. Investigations revealed that some operators were also involved in threatening and intimidating competitors.
