Buyer Beware - Be Careful Where You Walk....

This message is general in nature (not studio specific).

In reading some previous posts, a "consumer" was going to report a specific studio to the RMT association and Alberta Health, because he "came home with more then he bargained for", (is my general understanding of what was said/implied).

I find that kind of ironic (to say the least), that a person would go to that length to call-out such a business considering:

- He first of all knowingly is entering a business that is "borderline" licensed for therapeutic massage (if at all).

- He is engaging in "more" then what a therapeutic massage requires (asking for additional services sexual in nature)

- He then cries foul and wants to report them because he "contracted" something (I can say that if I go for a therapeutic massage, that their hands are only touching the non-sexual areas of my body).

- He then goes onto this forum to complain about such business (what was he hoping to gain out of it ?)

Anyone who partakes in visiting a "semi-legit" massage studio and asking for "additional" services is knowingly crossing the line from good to bad.

I can say (on a personal note), an acquaintance once hinted at me that "a friend of a friend" saw me walk into an Asian studio.
I ignored the comment and didn't say yes or no.
Yes, the place was an Asian Studio.
Yes, the place did provide additional services, but you could also ask for a regular massage and receive such a massage (which is what I hinted at what I was doing there - nothing more nothing less).

If you are asking for "more", what precautions are you taking to ensure that you don't leave with more then you bargained with? This person wouldn't of had to worry about getting anything from a legit studio.

He only admitted to the world about visiting this place, because he obviously has to make aware the people in his life that he now has this "take home problem" ...in other words "he had to out himself", when he didn't want to.

We each draw the line of what we want to do for excitement. It is not our place to judge each other for what receive, likewise we all know where we are going and what we are doing when we are doing it.

I also feel that the op of the deleted posts lost all credibility not because of a bad review. There are plenty of bad reviews. He lost his credibility due to the manner in which he left his comments which essentially was 2 lines of name calling and accusations with holes in his story. Don't know what his motives are. Maybe he's up out to discredit? Shake up the industry? Lonely and looking to get a rise out of people? Who knows...not gonna give it another thought

Jeez RMG.. you’ve been staying up late and watching Deerhunter re-runs too often. This hobby is not so dramatic or dangerous if you take precautions.

I am a business person, I run my businesses with statistics and science, I seldom put on my tinfoil hat. I do fully appreciate that certain ventures are inherently more risky (but generally more rewarding) than others. An example would be like keeping your money in a bank savings account, the venture has zero risk (almost zero anyway) but your reward is lower than investing in a riskier venture like investing in stocks. For those who wants ultra high rewards, they can always invest in open ended unprotected hedge funds but can they stomach the risk, I cannot. Even if you carry on a moderately risky venture like buying stocks, the risk can be mitigated almost completely as long as you apply commonsense and take proper precautions; I hedge many of my stock positions. I completely agree with Albertaman's comment: "This hobby is not so dramatic or dangerous if you take precautions."

Beyond science, there is my experience, and I do suggest that I have experienced more than many. I know that certain establishments specialize in selling riskier ventures. In fact, I know that there are certain seedy establishments which cater to the ultra high risk seekers among us by allowing risky ventures with no protections; if you know the search terms, they are not hard to find in that dark dark place known as LL. If you are not a risky thrill seeker, and you take commonsense precautions, your risk should be negligible even if you invest in a riskier venture. And if you go to one of the ultra high risk establishment to partake in unprotected ultra high risk ventures, you should have known the risk and you do it with your eyes open.

My experience also tells me that riskier ventures generally only happen at establishments which specialize in providing such ventures; they don't generally happen in places we frequent. No, you can't just walk into a common bank branch and buy stocks. Yes, this is a YMMV business but the YMMV part generally comes with long well established relationships. When we are talking about a well established establishment known for providing safe ventures, I can safely conclude that the chance of any risky business being conducted is low or nil.

At one point in life, I heard a story from a drunken oilfield worker at a bar: "I lost my life savings at a bank, no not a foreign bank, a Canadian bank, no not a small one, one of the big ones, yes that well established one who everyone knows, no not stocks, I don't invest in anything risky, I kept my money in a nice safe savings account, no I don't know who my bank advisor was, just some random lady I met at the counter, I only saw her once, I swear I did not invest in anything risky, I just deposited my money in their savings account and the next day, the money is gone, now I am going to figure out how to sue them". When I hear stories like that I just look empty glasses on the bar counter and smile. I have done business with that same bank and I know my money is pretty safe in their saving accounts; and no, that bank does not sell risky investments.

I digress, I have no idea what I am writing about. One thing I do want to appeal to everyone's commonsense here; this hobby is YMMV. There will be relationships that I have which none of you can have. When I was dating one of my regulars, there were things which we did which would be out of the ordinary relationship between a client and a service provider.

The bottom line is: "Unless you are writing about an establishment which specialize in providing high risk ventures, please do not write about high risk ventures, do not even imply that high risk ventures exist at those establishments. It is at best YMMV at the non-specialized establishments. And please do not ask openly, even asking has implications; individuals' livelihoods and licenses are at stake here. DM is a great way to ask discreetly. On the flip side, if you are writing about an establishment which specialize in high risk ventures, please do give us all of the glorious details; I for one loves Mebad's AMP stories."

That's another great point, most diseases have a long incubation period which makes it impossible to pin down a time and location unless it is the one and only time certain activities were carried out by the individual. The scenario is a little far fetch.

When I put on my tinfoil hat, I start to think about establishments nearby (especially new ones) which may benefit if the older more established ones are hurt. I then take off the hat as no legitimate business person would stoop that low to gain business share.

In light of how tough the competition is, I would not say that is impossible. Many of these are monitored by larger organizations to some degree. Some are partnered with 2 3 0r more places. I could see rival factions messing with each other.
