Hello

I am currently studying reflexology in Falkirk, and I would be very interested to hear the pros and cons of setting up business on your own.

The pros are that you get to make the decisions of where and how you are going to work and decide how much you are worth, you also hopefully see all your hard work come to fruition.

The cons, most businesses go out of business in the first two years of existence, you can put a lot of effort in for not a very good return, you can go bust if you borrow heavily to set up and the buck stops with you.

Apart from that most of us would not have it any other way, you just have to be careful you do not overstretch your budget and it helps if there is a second income in the early days until you can get established.

Of course it depends on what you mean by setting up a business.

If you were thinking of buying or renting a clinic, then you will find yourself under pressure to be using it for yourself or renting it out to other therapists for as much of the day (and evening as possible). For every hour that a treatment room is empty, it is costing you money.

However, if you just planned to work from home or as a mobile therapist, your overheads would be minimal, so the risk is smaller.

I think Paul has said it all. I love giving and receiving reflexology and the reflexology clients that I have come back time and again. At present I have six clients who come every week ! They just can't get enough. Unfortunately I could not live on the money that comes from this and I don't have that many overheads as I work from home. I find that you need to be able to offer more than one therapy and even this doesn't guarantee an adequate income.
Having said that, I love my work and don't even think of it as work. Business is picking up but it has been a very slow process.

Have to agree with the posts already made and also bear in mind us therapists even when working really hard will never become millionaires! It can be difficult at first as you have to build your client base but if you have financial support from elsewhere then this can make a big difference to your work and ensure you enjoy it to.....

Try and start off with support or whilst working part time until you can build up.

Lots of words of wisdom. I realise that I won't make alot of money as a reflexologist, but to be perfectly honest that doesn't bother me. I am really enjoying learning it, and fingers crossed I will pass my exams, and be able to use it on others. My college, and others, have explained that it may be of benefit to be able to provide another therapy, but also remember -jack of all trades, master of none!
