Bars to go to near Shanghai Hotel anyone?

Probably the easiest way is jump in a taxi at the hotel although if the weather is good you could walk it in 10 mins or so. Just turn right out of your hotel and you will come to the junction with Yan An Lu. Turn right again and keep walking but you will need to cross to the other side, easiest place to do that is at the next junction (Huashan Lu) by the Equatorial Hotel. You will then get to Tong Ren Lu after a few minutes.

My experience in other places on the mainland of China is as follows for your reference:

1) take a taxi at the right time, say around 9:30 PM, a bit earlier
2) chat with the driver and test the waters
3) if the drive is a newcomer, find a new taxi as soon as possible, repeat 2)
4) if the drive is an experienced guide, tell him what you really want to do this evening, including your requirement and budget
5) give him a tip if he can do the job and right after the job is well done
6) you'll, in most cases, be taken to where you look for

Of course, this little plan needs talking in mandarin, as all taxi drivers in Shanghai, even in the whole China, don't have any idea of English. In my view, a little bit Chinese is more than enough. Or, you may try to show the following characters to the driver:
1) 找漂亮妹妹 (looking for a pretty girl)
2) 价格合理 (reasonable price, say, below RMB 500)
3) 安全 (safe)

Do I just get hotel reception to translate the road junction you mention into chinese for the taxi driver ?

Well, apparently Julu Lu is closed now according to someone I was talking to earlier but I can't quote first hand on that.

From where you are go to Tong Ren Lu/Yan An Lu (11 kwai in a taxi) and it's full of bars with girls. Best is probably Manhattans although best not arrive until after 10.30 as it doesn't start to fill up until then. Be careful in some of the other bars as 'take away' isn't always on the menu and you may get stung just for a load of expensive drinks and not much more.

Greetings all.

I'm staying at the Shanghai hotel end of October. I had already booked and paid for this hotel when I realised that the 4th floor massage place is now closed! Argh!!

Could anyone recommend bars to go to near my hotel in order to pick up Bar girls/Free lancers?
I did go to one street a couple of years ago just behind the Shanghai hotel. (can't remember the name of the street) Quite a large street with a lot of small bars - unfortunately it seemed a lot of the girls in the bars where just there to get you to buy lady drinks whilst fondling your crotch - very rip-off if you know what I mean. I got chucked out as soon as I 'ran out of cash'

I don't really know Shanghai very well - only stayed 2 days on my first visit.
