A terrible experience in a Chiang Mai bar!

I was in “Beer Bar Complex” in Loi Khroh road nearby night bazar. I wanted to choose a bar and spend my night life there. I went to that bar. I had some drink, later mamasan introduced a lady to me who couldn’t speak English. Mamasan said all the best about her. She said I can pay 1500 Baht +400 Baht (bar fine) to take her for long time. I bought some drink for her and myself and I paid bar fine to take her my hotel for long time. When we had sex after a few second she stopped me! Actually she was a newbie and she loved money not sex! Anyway I didn’t want she feels bad so I stopped. Really I felt terrible! However she asked me for money! After some discussion (without language!) I agreed to pay her 500 Baht and she goes back but she didn’t accept so I took her back to the bar. I talked to mamasan and the owner (who introduced himself a customer at fist!). The mamasan and the owner took the lady’s side, even they wanted to hit me!!! They were a few big guys which at first I thought they are customers but they were the owner and his sons and friends! Anyway we agreed I pay half of the price (1500/2=800 Baht!). I gave a 1000 Baht bill. He took it but he didn’t give back the rest! Then the mamasan came again and lied. She said we agreed on 2000 at first not 1500!!! But one minuts before I gave money all said 1500!!! Anyway I didn’t want to fight with them so I left there. I lost some money and I felt I have got rob! Thief’s work is much better than what they have done! Actually they lost more than me. Because later I find a good place and I spend my night life during two weeks stay in Chiang Mai. I was there in June 2010, the time there were very little tourists there, so all bars and tourist places wished to have a customer! They did anything to take a customer inside even for a drink but Kat’s Bar owner and stuff were really rude and fareless!!!

Beware some good reports in Internet is from bar owners!!

What do you do in such a cases? Would you give me some good hints for such cases? Thank you so much in advance.

I`d change bars and let them see me spending money/having a good time at someone else`s bar.

I know the complex in CM,the bars are all very close to each other.

As far as the money and the BG go,just write it off to experience...

its a shame what happened to you, most of the time Thia's think different to us. For example, if it is low season and not many customers the owners will try and squeeze as much money out of you as possible, either by increasing drinks prices or by (in your case) trying to rip you off.

What they dont seem to realise is by doing this they will lose money in the long run by having even less custom.

like the above poster said, just choose another bar and when the other place see's you spending lots of money there, they will realise that scaming people doesnt pay off

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but all you can do is put it to experience. Just obviously never go there again, and perhaps trust a gut instinct about a place. Of course - the place might have looked totally ok, I don't know.

Something though I always go by, is the saying "if somewhere/something looks dodgy - then it probably is"

To the OP, you would be well advised to go to Jaffamans "69" bar (Nearby) and get some free advice over a drink or three there.

1. Chuck her out and don't give her any money.
2. Go back to bar and explain what happened, hopefully they would give you your money back. However in this case that would not have happened - just walk (quickly) away and avoid confrontation. Give the bar a wide berth.

I've had this kind of thing happen on a few occassions in the past...Its like a Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde thing...they appear to have one personality at first and then once they're in your room they switch to another and are a totally useless....I don't waste a minute longer...tell them its not working out, give them a token 200 or 300 baht for taxi money or whatever, and kick them right out the door...enough said!

You're a newb, perhaps not. Look on this as a learning experience. I apologise if this sounds a bit harsh, it's not deliberate (it's late for me and sometimes my English fails me).

What you did wrong.
- Trusted the Mamasan to choose a girl for you. Don't trust Mama unless you are looking for something specific.
- Didn't get to know the girl, even if she can't speak much English there should be clues in her behaviour, looks and so forth.
- Taking the girl back to the bar. All the scamming could have been avoided if you simply took the girl outside and left her there. There is nothing to be gained by returning her to her bar.

What you should have done.
- Given the girl the money in the room and left the room with the girl. Outside the hotel, turn around and walk back in (or head off to another bar altogether). No point in getting into a potential conflict with Thais back at the bar. You'll always end up loosing.

Be on your guard and try not to look like a mark. Be assertive, never aggressive as Thais typically dont respond to assertive behaviour with aggressiveness (few big exceptions like Phuket's tuk tuk drivers and other low lives). If they dont think they can scam you they wont so dont give them the opportunity.

I take it the bar is called "Kats" or "Kats bar". Name and shame, it at least gives some others a warning.

Basically this bar is illegal because they make profit with prostitution. They should get their asses kicked off. In your place i wouldnt have paid more than the bar fine. When you take the girl to the hotel you can give her a " money gift".

Well, there are many such bars that you will find there that are just making money by prostitution that is why it is very important for us take some better details about the hotels and bars that are reputed and good in terms of having fun there.

I will suggest you to just talk to some friends of yours who went there so that, they will let you know properly what can be the best option to choose as far as bars are concern.
